The Planetary Sciences research group at the Institute of Geological Sciences at the FU Berlin participates in various experiments on space missions of ESA, NASA and JAXA like Europa Clipper, JUICE or Destiny+. Furthermore, we generate analogue data for space missions in our laboratories on campus. We are looking for a young scientist with enthusiasm for space missions, ideally with experience in machine learning and mass spectrometry.

Job description:

  • Evaluation of mass spectra from space probes and from analogue experiments recorded in the laboratory.
  • Collaboration with a computer scientist who is developing a machine learning (ML) algorithm for the automated analysis of the above-mentioned mass spectra.

Requirements:
Master's degree in Planetary Sciences, Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science or Geology or in a similar field.

Desirable:
  • Knowledge in the field of Planetary Sciences
  • very good written and spoken English (B2/C1)
  • Knowledge of mass spectrometry
  • Programming skills, especially in the field of machine learning, are an advantage
  • Basic knowledge of space probe navigation (software SPICE) is an advantage
